Plan to raise gas tax to pay for roads approved by Senate committee

A new plan to fund the roads in Michigan has been approved by a Senate committee. The $1.4 billion road-funding plan would raise the state gasoline tax by 15 cents per gallon over three years. It would also cut the income tax if Michigan’s general revenues rise above inflation.

The plan would include state budget cuts and redirect $700 million in general funds to road and bridge infrastructure. Democrats are strongly against the plan. It is up for a vote in the full Senate Wednesday.
