Meeting Wednesday to decide fate of Park Avenue Hotel

A special meeting of the Detroit Historical Commission will be held Wednesday afternoon on the plans to tear down the old decrepit Park Avenue Hotel building, which is standing in the way of the Red Wings Arena project. Public comment is planned. At issue is the size of the loading dock for the arena. A large loading dock, which is preferred by the Ilitch organization, would wipe out the old building. A smaller loading dock would spare the building, but would force some traffic onto nearby streets, and make the arena operation less efficient.

The Park Avenue building is owned by an Ilitch Company. It’s designated as an historic site.
