Officials confirm bird flu in Michigan

The Michigan Departments of Natural Resources and Agriculture have confirmed the state’s first case of avian influenza HPAI–or bird flu. The disease was found in free-ranging Canada geese in Macomb County.  Avian influenza is a virus that can infect free range birds and domestic poultry like chicken and turkeys.

The centers for disease control considers the risk to people from the HPAI virus’s to be low. To date no human HPAI infections have been detected in the U.S. Michigan is the 21st state to report a case of HPAI since December of 2014.
