CHRIS CLONTS

Chris Clonts is the senior editor for technology at SAE International, where he leads editorial coverage for Automotive Engineering, Autonomous Vehicle Engineering, and other key publications, as well as serving as editorial producer for SAE.org. Based in Troy, Michigan, Clonts brings a sharp editorial eye and deep industry knowledge to his role, reporting on cutting-edge developments in electrification, AI-driven vehicle systems, and sustainable manufacturing practices. His work helps shape the conversation around mobility innovation and engineering standards.

Before joining SAE, Clonts built a diverse and impactful journalism career, including roles at the Detroit Free Press and the MotorTrend Group. His experience spans everything from crime reporting in Savannah, Georgia, to automotive test drives in Scotland, and he’s known for blending technical insight with compelling storytelling. He’s especially proud of collaborative newsroom efforts, such as the Free Press’ coverage of the 2003 Northeast Blackout and civic reporting that helped pass critical infrastructure improvements in Michigan.

Clonts is also the creator and voice behind “Eye On Engineering,” a weekly segment airing Mondays during the 6 a.m. hour of “‘JR Morning” on 760 WJR. In this feature, Chris distills complex automotive topics into accessible, engaging commentary for a broad audience—drawing on decades of experience and a passion for learning.
