Detroit Plaza Fate Coming

A divided Detroit City Council has until 4 this afternoon to reconsider its vote in rejecting a proposal to turn a closed-down section of Woodward Avenue into a permanent gathering place.

it’s called the ‘Spirit of Detroit Plaza’ and it is located just west of the Detroit City Hall.

Detroit’s administration was seeking a five year closure of the area on Woodward between Jefferson and Larned.

But the pedestrian plaza has been controversial since its inception two years ago when it was started as a three-month pilot program without input from the city council.

It came up for a council vote last week.

Concerns were expressed about traffic and safety issues.

A vote on the issue ended in a 4-4 deadlock.

Supporters say the pedestrian plaza has been a great gathering place for local artists and food trucks and attracted some 5-thousand visitors last month.
