Macomb Jail Plan May Go To Voters

A Macomb County Board of Commissioners committee meets today and is expected to take up the proposal that would put a 375-million dollar jail funding plan on the November ballot. It calls for a new tax to pay for the jail.
Supporters of a new jail point out that the current facility was built in the 1950’s, is understaffed and lacks many items needed for inmate care and protection.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and the county’s executive office have asked for commission approval for a 21-year millage.

They would like voters to decide the issue.

The committee is expected to review the proposal at today’s meeting.

If an agreement can be reached, it would be sent on to the full board of commissioners at its meeting next Thursday.
