Today is the deadline for General Motors salaried workers who have been offered buyouts.
The automaker announced on October 31st that if was offering a voluntary severance program to its 18-thousand salaried employees in North America who have 12 or more years experience.
Analysts say GM is now as much a tech company as it is an auto company and that younger-more tech-savvy workers are being sought.
They point out that the skills of current employees are becoming outdated on a continuing basis.
The changes are coming as the automaker is moving quickly into electric, fuel cells and self-driving cars.
But the buyouts, in addition to dealing with a world of the future, is also a move of cutting costs.
