EAST LANSING ~ The Spartans lost in overtime after a failed 2‑point conversion against Illinois in Saturday’s homecoming game, falling just short after a late fourth‑quarter comeback. MSU rallied from a largely lopsided start, but the Illini left East Lansing with the win.
MSU entered the matchup hoping to end its three‑game–now four‑game–losing streak and nearly did. The Spartans opened with a scoreless first quarter before running back Jaziun Patterson put up MSU’s first points with a second‑quarter touchdown. Still, they trailed by 13 at halftime. Illinois stretched its lead to 23‑7 on the first play of the third quarter, a field goal from Ethan Moczulski. The scene felt all too familiar for many alumni in the stands.

(CONTINUED) MSU pushed back, executing three touchdowns in the final 17 minutes of regulation, even after a controversial offsides erased the momentum of a recovery and 15‑yard run by freshman Samson Gash. The Spartans tied the game with a touchdown at 1:17 and held off Illinois’s final drive to force overtime.
Illinois scored in the first overtime play, and MSU answered with a touchdown of its own. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald and his staff opted to go for the win with a 2‑point conversion, but the Illini defense stopped the pass.
While it is a loss in the books, MSU’s comeback and overtime response showed a team still fighting. Patterson’s four touchdowns exemplified that resilience and offered a reminder that the Spartans’ ceiling may be higher than their record suggests.
