October 6, 2026 ~ Lloyd Jackson and Mario Morrow talk with Dr. Matthew Sims, Corewell Health Infectious Diseases Research Director, about a worker’s death at a Russian plague lab.
MOSCOW ~ The death of a worker at a Russian plague research laboratory has raised questions about whether an accident involving the bacterium that causes plague occurred. Officials have not confirmed the cause of death, and details surrounding the incident remain limited.
Health authorities are monitoring individuals who may have had contact with the worker while assessing any risk of transmission. Although plague can be a serious illness, it is caused by bacteria and can be treated with antibiotics, making it different from viral outbreaks such as COVID-19.
