EAST LANSING ~ Michigan State University students and employees are navigating an unusual disruption after a campus wide power outage left much of the East Lansing campus without hot water. University officials encouraged remote classes and remote work while crews continued efforts to restore normal operations and repair issues connected to the campus power plant.
The outage began after a problem was identified at the T.B. Simon Power Plant, causing a loss of power that temporarily shut down the facility’s ability to generate electricity and steam for campus buildings. Although power has been restored, condensation in the steam distribution system is limiting hot water service to many residence halls, classrooms and dining facilities that rely on the network.
“I want to extend my sincere appreciation to members of our campus community for their patience and understanding as we diligently work to restore normal operations,” MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz said. “I know how inconvenient this interruption of services is for members of our community, and I want to assure them we are doing everything we can to resolve issues at the power plant.”
