TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. ~ A Texas Air National Guard F-16 fighter jet crashed in northern Michigan on Thursday during a routine training mission, prompting a large emergency response and a temporary shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. The pilot safely ejected before the aircraft went down and was reported to be conscious, alert and in stable condition after being taken to a local hospital.
For residents near the crash site, the incident brought an unexpected disruption as emergency crews responded and authorities worked to address potential hazards from the wreckage. Officials said the crash remains under investigation, and evacuation and shelter-in-place orders were lifted after crews determined the area was safe.
