DETROIT ~ Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers is calling on Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed to return campaign contributions from individuals associated with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, arguing the ties raise concerns about judgment and national security. Rogers also pointed to outside political spending supporting El-Sayed and said voters should closely examine the people and organizations backing candidates seeking federal office.
Rogers made the comments during a radio interview, where he questioned El-Sayed’s past associations and criticized what he described as insufficient condemnation of terrorism. He also defended his decision to skip a planned Fox 2 forum, alleging moderator bias and saying upcoming debates will provide voters with an opportunity to compare the candidates’ positions on issues including national security and health care.
As Michigan’s Senate race intensifies, Rogers said transparency about political support and affiliations remains an important issue for voters. “If you want to send somebody back to be in the United States Senate, they ought to at least be able to get a security clearance,” Rogers said as he criticized El-Sayed’s past associations and political allies.
