EAST LANSING ~ MSU wide receiver Rodney Bullard Jr. was deemed eligible for a fourth college season just 12 days before the first game, following a NCAA denial caused by a clerical error that started his eligibility window early.
“I had a great feeling that at some point it would come through,” Bullard told reporters Monday morning, though he did not expect a decision early in the week. Bullard had been scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a preliminary show‑cause and injunction hearing against the NCAA regarding the denial. The case is effectively resolved after the NCAA accepted his eligibility.
The error dates back to 2021, when Bullard was mistakenly filed as a full‑time student at Valdosta State University despite holding only part‑time credits. That incorrect status started his four‑year eligibility clock a year too soon. Valdosta State acknowledged the mistake and corrected his transcript, but the NCAA rejected multiple waivers and appeals before reversing course.
The reason for the NCAA’s eventual overturn is unclear. Spartan quarterback Alessio Milivojevic said, “I’m proud of him, happy for him, and excited to play with him.” Bullard practiced with the team throughout spring despite uncertainty surrounding his status.
His return adds experience to a roster navigating leadership changes, with head coach Pat Fitzgerald and athletic director Dan Bartholomae both new to MSU. Bullard’s position on the depth chart and his opportunity for playing time will be clarified Friday ahead of Michigan State’s game against Toledo in East Lansing.
