ALLEN PARK ~ As the Detroit Lions wrapped up their public practice in preparation for Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders, Head Coach Dan Campbell said Aidan Hutchinson is an asset to the defensive line.
“He’s definitely a pain, but I’m glad he’s our pain,” Campbell said on Monday about the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2022 NFL draft. QB Jared Goff echoed his coach in saying “Hutch is a game-wrecker and I’m glad he’s on our team.”

(CONTINUED) Hutchinson is returning for another healthy season after a broken leg cut his 2024 season short. Last season, Hutchinson had 14.5 sacks and was selected Second-Team All-Pro. Since coaches and teammates have seen Hutchinson in full force, his strengths have been prioritized. The Lions brought on 317 pound rookie OT Blake Miller to face Hutchinson in padded practices–a development opportunity for both players while testing the defensive star against a larger blocker.
Hutchinson is expected to start for the Lions this season, though the depth chart isn’t as clear for other positions. Cade Mays suffered a wrist injury last weekend, leading Campbell and his staff to evaluate several options. Tate Ratledge took snaps at center Sunday, and Campbell said Ratledge may be called upon if needed during the season. Juice Scruggs and Seth McLaughlin also remain candidates for the role.
Campbell said a “significant amount of starters” will play against Washington, a change from Detroit’s preseason opener when many veterans did not see game action. Cornerback Nick Whiteside, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, returned to practice Wednesday, while wide receiver Jameson Williams was also on the field after being limited by a shoulder injury. Campbell said neither injury is considered serious as the Lions continue preparations for Saturday’s noon kickoff at Ford Field.
