DETROIT ~ Joe Gagnon, known to generations of radio listeners as “The Appliance Doctor,” died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, at age 84. Gagnon built a broadcasting career that combined appliance expertise, consumer advocacy, and practical advice, becoming a familiar voice on 760 WJR and radio stations across the country for more than 25 years.
Gagnon’s radio success grew from his extensive experience in the appliance industry and his work in consumer affairs. Through his programs, newspaper columns, and two books, he helped consumers make informed purchasing decisions, avoid unnecessary repairs, and recognize fraudulent business practices. He also served as a fraud investigator for Detroit Consumer Affairs and the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, bringing attention to consumer issues that reached a national audience.

Oct. 29, 2023 ~ On his final broadcast of The Home & Appliance Show on WJR, Joe Gagnon reflected on more than four decades of helping consumers save money, avoid scams, and make smarter decisions about their home appliances. Joined by longtime producer Donald “The Hammer” Schuster, Gagnon spent the program answering listeners’ questions, sharing memories, and expressing gratitude to the audience that made “The Appliance Doctor” a Detroit radio institution for generations.
(CONTINUED) Gagnon began broadcasting on WJR in 1995, where his appliance program reached listeners throughout Michigan and beyond through the station’s expansive nighttime signal. His consumer advocacy efforts continued alongside his broadcasting career and were recognized in 2002 when Michigan enacted the Joe Gagnon Appliance Repair Act, legislation named in honor of his work protecting consumers.
In later years, Gagnon remained a regular part of WJR, hosting the weekend program The Home & Appliance Show. Joined by longtime producer and co-host Donald “The Hammer” Schuster, he continued taking listener calls and sharing the practical, often humorous advice that became his trademark. His nearly three-decade association with WJR made him one of the station’s most recognizable specialty-program hosts and a distinctive voice in Detroit radio.
Visitation will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Elton Black Funeral Home, 3295 Highland Road in Highland. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
