DETROIT ~ The Detroit Tigers wrapped up their trade deadline activity Monday by sending starting pitcher Casey Mize to the San Diego Padres. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft spent parts of seven seasons in Detroit, overcoming injuries and setbacks before developing into one of the American League’s most effective starters this year. The Padres acquired Mize and infielder Gage Workman, while the Tigers received pitching prospects Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf in return.

(CONTINUED) Mize leaves Detroit in the midst of the best season of his career. Through 16 starts in 2026, the right-hander posted a 2.70 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP and 85 strikeouts in 86 2/3 innings while earning his first All-Star selection. Opponents batted just .213 against him, making him one of the most sought-after pitchers available before the deadline. In return, the Tigers acquired Mayfield, the Padres’ No. 2 prospect, along with Wolf, adding young pitching talent as the organization looks toward the future.
For Tigers fans, the move is bittersweet. Mize spent years working his way back from injuries, including Tommy John surgery, and finally delivered on the promise that made him the top pick in the draft. While the trade signals Detroit’s focus on strengthening its long-term outlook, it also means saying goodbye to a player who became a symbol of perseverance within the organization. For Detroit, the hope is that the return, headlined by Mayfield, will help accelerate the club’s next competitive window.
