MICHIGAN ~ Michigan joined six other states over the weekend in publicly reporting cyberattacks on municipal water systems, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
The FBI reported the attacks to state officials on Tuesday of last week, with EGLE spokesperson Dale George confirming that nine water systems across the state corroborated the bureau’s report. He added that all systems were operating normally as of Saturday.
A total of seven states reported attacks on water infrastructure last week, with 30 water systems in Minnesota reporting issues with cyberattacks. Federal authorities claimed that Iranian hackers were behind the cyber incidents, though investigations are still ongoing and no culprit has been determined.
