DETROIT ~ After months of negotiations, delays, and a cancelled joint opening celebration, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open to public traffic at noon on Monday, offering another connection point to motorists between Detroit and Windsor.
The bridge can be accessed on the Detroit side via I-75 through an interchange located near Mexicantown. Tolls for personal vehicles will cost $5.75 USD, or $8 CAD. The dual pedestrian and bike lanes on the bridge will open later on Aug. 5.
A joint U.S.-Canadian ribbon-cutting ceremony was previously planned for July 24, but the Canadian side decided to hold its own celebration after President Donald Trump announced that he would implement a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian products over claims of “discrimination” towards certain U.S. goods. This came after months of delays for the bridge opening after Trump pushed for a new toll deal with Canada, which was reached earlier in July.
