MICHIGAN ~ A proposal to ban political contributions from monopoly utility companies such as DTE Energy and Consumers Energy is drawing attention in Michigan. State Sen. Jim Runestad said he is considering supporting the idea, though he expressed concerns about whether similar restrictions would apply to unions and other organizations that receive government contracts. He said the details of the proposal would be important in determining whether he ultimately supports it.
Runestad argued that Michigan residents face high utility rates and frequent power outages despite the utilities’ monopoly status. He criticized DTE and Consumers Energy, saying they have significant political influence and continue to receive approval for rate increases. He also criticized the Michigan Public Service Commission, saying its members rarely reject utility requests and are not directly accountable to voters.
