July 5 ~ Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow announced Sunday that she is suspending her campaign for the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, reshaping one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate primaries.
The decision leaves U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and former Wayne County Health Director Abdul El-Sayed as the two leading Democratic contenders heading into the Aug. 4 primary election. The eventual nominee will face Republican former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers in November in a race viewed as critical to the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
In a video posted to social media Sunday, McMorrow thanked volunteers, donors and campaign staff while emphasizing that she remains committed to public service.
“Today, I’m announcing that I am suspending my campaign for United States Senate,” she said, adding that she was making the decision with a “deep sense of gratitude” for supporters who helped build a campaign fueled by grassroots donations and no corporate PAC money
