WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ NASA has a plan to build a $30 billion moon base at the lunar south pole and return humans to the moon, and the agency is one step closer to reaching its goal after announcing a $590 million investment Tuesday in three aerospace companies — Astrobotic, Firefly and Intuitive Machines.
These companies will assist in four uncrewed missions with the goal of delivering scientific cargo to the lunar outpost. The equipment includes landers, rovers, and more, with the plan being to establish infrastructure so that astronauts can live and work in “semi-permanent” settlements, according to CNN.
The missions, as part of the Artemis program, are set to launch in 2028, coming near the end of Phase 1, which is projected to be completed by 2029 and cost $10 billion.
Artemis IV is targeted for 2028, which would mark the first time humans set foot on the moon since the Apollo era which ended in 1972. The ultimate goal of the moon base will be to send the first humans to Mars.
