LANSING ~ A new report commissioned by Michigan business groups is suggesting lawmakers bolster state data center regulations to quell public backlash and concerns over AI technology.
Lansing-based Public Sector Consultants released a report Thursday acknowledging that public sentiment on data centers is generally negative due to concerns over high water use, energy costs, community impacts, job loss, and transparency. The report, though, said that “Michigan has an opportunity to attract significant new investments into the state through data center development,” despite public concerns.
The report recommends making sure these data centers create more high-tech jobs, that the Michigan Public Service Commission protects consumers from energy rate increases, and require any data center directly drawing groundwater to use a low-water-usage cooling technology.
The Michigan Chamber Foundation and Detroit Regional Chamber commissioned the report.
