THREE RIVERS, MI ~ Union members at an axle production plant in Southwest Michigan began striking Monday morning, disrupting production at a major supplier for General Motors.
UAW Local 2093, which represents workers at American Axle in Three Rivers, voted in May to authorize a strike if a new contract was not reached when it expired on May 31. Union leadership said that wages have stagnated since the Great Recession of 2008, when many workers took pay cuts, and are asking for wages to be increased. Negotiations began in March.
American Axle is a Tier 1 parts supplier for GM.
