WASHINGTON — A male suspect is dead following a shooting near the White House Saturday evening that triggered a major Secret Service response and a temporary lockdown of the complex.
A U.S. Secret Service spokesperson confirms the suspect who has not yet been identified opened fire toward a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, just outside the White House grounds.
Authorities say the man removed a weapon from a bag and began shooting at officers stationed at the perimeter. Secret Service agents returned fire, striking the suspect. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
During the exchange, a second person believed to be a bystander was also struck by gunfire. That person’s condition has not been released, and it remains unclear whether they were hit by the suspect or during the return fire.
Officials say the suspect had a reported history of mental health issues, though a motive has not been confirmed.
No Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time but was not impacted.
The incident prompted a rapid lockdown, with agents rushing reporters and staff to shelter as dozens of shots were reported. The lockdown was lifted after the scene was secured.
The FBI and other federal authorities are continuing to investigate.
