May 18, 2026 ~ Founder and CEO of Anderson Economic Group Patrick Anderson discusses the economic impact of deaths outpacing births in Michigan.
DETROIT, MICH. ~ Starting in 2020, Michigan death rates have been exceeding birth rates, and this trend, also known as “natural decrease,” is projected to continue until 2030. The numbers were pointing to a decrease before the pandemic started, but COVID’s impact pushed the state to experience something it hasn’t seen since at least 1900, according to The Detroit News.
These rates have economists worried about the future of Michigan, especially since the aging population is already deteriorating the state’s work force.
“If we didn’t have any immigration, we’d be declining in population,” Anderson said on Focus. “So it’s definitely something where a lot of people are saying, ‘Hey, we should have more population here, and we should try to attract people to live here and make it a better place that people want to stay and want to start a family.'”
