May 8, 2026 ~ Congressman Tom Barrett explains his newly proposed bill aimed at limiting military action in Iran and reasserting Congress’s role in authorizing war.
WASHINGTON D.C. ~ A U.S. representative and Army veteran from Michigan is looking to rein in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
GOP U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett (MI-7) introduced the bill on Thursday that would put a 90-day deadline on President Donald Trump to limit the actions that the U.S. can take against Iran in the war that has lasted over two months. While the bill would allow military force to demolish any possible Iranian nuclear program, continue enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports, and guide U.S. ships through the Strait of Hormuz, it would also bar against “nation-building,” limit U.S. ground troops from being deployed to Iran, and prevent the U.S. from occupying Iranian territory.
Barett told WJR that his bill aims to fall in line with the War Powers Act.
“The 60-day mark for the conflict going on in Iran passed about a week ago, at the very beginning of May,” he said. “There is no authorization that has been introduced into Congress. There’s been no declaration of war, of course, and to me, I set out to resolve this constitutional issue and limit the application of force in this effort.“
