PLYMOUTH, MI ~ Dozens of Detroit-area business, civic, and political leaders joined WJR’s Paul W. Smith on the air Tuesday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
Smith‘s 41st annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration took place at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth, featuring live music performances and a rowdy atmosphere to celebrate the holiday. The annual broadcast first began in 1985, with the event going strong for the past four decades.
Notable guests this year included Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson, U.S. Senate Candidate Mike Rogers, gubernatorial candidate Mike Duggan, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, and gubernatorial candidate Mike Swanson.
WJR’s first St. Patrick’s Day broadcast was a small gathering of a dozen or so guests hosted in the Fisher Building lobby by legendary broadcaster J.P. McCarthy. From those roots, this event has become one of Detroit’s traditional St. Patrick’s Day kick-offs, with as many as several thousand guests each year.
