DETROIT ~ Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with President Donald Trump on Tuesday, reminding him that Canada paid for the construction of the Gordon Howie International Bridge and that the country will share ownership with the state of Michigan.
The Gordie Howe Bridge is finally expected to open this year, but Trump wants to keep it closed if Canada doesn’t offer up “at least one half of this asset,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday. The bridge is currently owned by both Canada and Michigan, as Canada has paid for the $5.7 billion project. This threat is the latest as tensions continue to grow between the U.S. and its northern neighbor over tariffs.
