EAST LANSING ~ Michigan State survived a hostile road environment at Jersey Mike’s Arena on Tuesday night, storming back from a sluggish first half to defeat Rutgers 88–79 in overtime. The Spartans trailed 37–28 at halftime, struggling to match Rutgers’ early energy and outside shooting. But MSU gradually steadied itself in the second half, chipping away at the deficit behind improved ball movement and a more physical defensive presence. By the end of regulation, the Spartans had completely flipped the momentum, forcing overtime where they dominated, outscoring Rutgers 15–6 in the extra period.
The hero of the night was unquestionably sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr., who delivered one of the best performances of his career. Fears poured in 29 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the field and an astounding 16-for-17 from the free-throw line, repeatedly attacking the rim and punishing Rutgers for every defensive lapse. He also dished out nine assists, orchestrating the offense with poise, especially as the game tightened late. Fears’ ability to control tempo was the difference between MSU stealing a road win and suffering a letdown.
