MINNEAPOLIS ~ A tense day in Minneapolis has sparked another wave of unrest after a man was fatally shot during a federal immigration operation. The incident unfolded Saturday, adding to the strain already gripping the city following a separate deadly encounter with immigration officers earlier this month.
Minneapolis’ police chief confirmed the victim was a 37‑year‑old man, believed by local officials to be a U.S. citizen, and urged people to clear the area, warning that the situation on the ground was becoming increasingly volatile. Police also said they believe the man was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. Federal officials said the individual had a handgun and extra ammunition and claimed the shooting occurred after agents attempted to disarm him, describing the gunfire as defensive.

Jan. 24, 2026 ~ Minnesota Governor Tim Walz speaks after a federal immigration operation in Minneapolis ended in the fatal shooting of a 37‑year‑old man.
(CONTINUED) The shooting occurred just over a mile from where another resident, Renee Good, was killed during an ICE encounter on January 7, a case that has resulted in daily demonstrations across the Twin Cities. Good was not the target of an arrest, and her death remains under federal investigation.
Crowds gathered quickly after Saturday’s shooting, confronting federal officers, blocking streets, and demanding an end to the ongoing enforcement surge. Officers responded with batons and flash‑bangs, as well as chemical irritants, as authorities declared the gathering an unlawful assembly.
Minnesota’s governor said he has been in contact with the White House and called for the federal government to withdraw the large number of immigration agents deployed across the state.
