A transgender person is running for local government in Western Michigan and both of the candidate’ names will appear on the ballot. Gidget Groendyk, who changed her name from Scott Wade Langford, says the basis of her campaign will be do introduce a non-discrimination ordinance to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents in Sparta. Groendyk wants to impact the business community as well. Candidates are asked to disclose previous names if they have changed their name within the past 10 years. Groendyk initially filed a ballot petition using the first name Scott, but the county elections administrators rejected it because it’s not her legal name.
