September 22, 2026 ~ Chris Renwick and Lloyd Jackson talk with Professor Arun Ross about the proposed AI Force, national security, and technology guardrails.
DETROIT ~ Artificial intelligence is advancing so quickly that experts say governments may need stronger oversight, testing and safety measures before powerful systems are widely deployed. Supporters of a proposed national AI strategy argue that dedicated leadership and clear guardrails could help identify security risks, respond to cyber threats and ensure AI tools are used responsibly while continuing to encourage innovation.
At the same time, experts caution that the full capabilities of advanced AI remain unknown, making regulation a significant challenge. While safety standards, evaluations and oversight can reduce risks, the technology’s rapid development means policymakers must balance maintaining a competitive edge with protecting national security and the public from unintended consequences.
