DETROIT ~ The Lions entered Saturday’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders looking for answers along their defensive front, and several young players delivered. With key contributors such as Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill held out, Detroit’s depth players were given an opportunity to make an impression in a 17-13 victory at Ford Field. The defensive line consistently pressured Washington quarterbacks and helped the Lions control the game defensively.
Veteran edge rusher DJ Wonnum and rookie Derrick Moore led the way. Wonnum recorded a sack and generated pressure throughout his snaps, while Moore made an immediate impact in his preseason debut, finishing with a sack, multiple tackles and a forced fumble. For a Lions team hoping to create a deeper pass rush rotation this season, both players showed why they could become important contributors once the regular season begins.

Several reserve linemen capitalized on extended playing time, helping the Lions evaluate depth and competition battles as roster decisions draw closer.
While the defensive line turned heads, center Juice Scruggs quietly made the most of his opportunity. The offseason addition started in the middle of Detroit’s offensive line and gained valuable game reps as the Lions continue building chemistry up front. Preseason games are often about evaluation as much as results, and Scruggs’ workload provided another chance for coaches to assess how he fits into Detroit’s plans heading into the regular season.
