ALLEN PARK ~ Strategies clash ahead of the Lions’ preseason opener against the Bengals. Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell said Thursday’s game will be an evaluation period for players looking to earn roster spots in a press conference Tuesday morning, but Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Zac Taylor said he plans to play his veteran starters.
Campbell explained that he’s looking for development of young players in the first preseason game. “Some of these rookies, young players, have a chance to see where they’ve grown. Do they take what you teach them to the field? And then some of the veteran guys that are playing for a spot, to watch them go out and compete, that’s what’s fun about all this.” He highlighted quarterback Luke Altmyer, cornerback Keith Abney, and offensive tackle Blake Miller as rising rookies with playing time potential.

CONTINUED: Taylor said Tuesday that though their time on the field will be limited, quarterback Joe Burrow, wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence will all touch turf on Thursday. These pros are a test for the Lions’ developing preseason players, but Campbell confirmed his consideration of the lopsided match-up. “I think Zac’s going to play those guys a couple drives, their starters.” Still, Campbell called the challenge an opportunity and “a great look for our guys.”
Player evaluations continue through training camp and preseason as the roster tightens. Campbell said his top line is set with “wide open” spots deeper into the depth chart. The Lions will face the Cincinnati Bengals on the road Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
