ALLEN PARK, MICH. ~ The Detroit Lions made running back Jahmyr Gibbs the highest paid player at his position on Thursday afternoon, signing him to a three-year, $67.5 million extension, worth up to $75.75 million.
Negotiations dug into the training camp schedule, as the three-time Pro Bowler missed a few practices before sorting out his deal close to the end of the second full week of training camp.
In 2025, Gibbs showed his explosiveness in both the run and pass game. The 24-year-old tallied 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 243 carries, while catching 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns.
Through two weeks of camp, injuries and player development have dominated the headlines. After rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder went down with a leg injury last week that will keep him sidelined for an uncertain amount of time, Detroit brought in veteran linebacker Devin White from Las Vegas, who finished as the third-leading tackler in the NFL in 2025.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams continues to impress, showing off his improved catching ability and speed by hauling in stunning touchdowns. Rookie defensive end Derrick Moore also left camp last weekend with a groin injury, and while he is expected to return shortly, second-year defensive lineman Ahmed Hassanein has turned heads after missing all of last season, showing off polished technique to go along with a relentless motor.
Detroit’s first preseason game is set for Thursday, Aug. 13 on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals at 7 p.m.
