Aug. 5, 2026 ~ Detroit Public Schools are responding to growing scrutiny after critical social media posts from a content creator sparked public debate. Karen Dumas discusses the district’s response and the broader impact of viral criticism.
DETROIT, MICH. ~ A series of viral social media videos raised serious concerns about the condition of some of the school buildings in Detroit.
In response, Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai Vitti held a virtual town hall meeting Monday, in which over 700 community members took part in. Questions arose about janitorial services in the district, and how they award contracts.
“When you have an external contractor, you have the privilege of canceling them if, in fact, they don’t perform,” Dumas said on All Talk. “The same way the City of Detroit now has private contractors for trash pickup. It’s certainly improved because now it is based on their performance. So it’s just a matter of moving some pieces around and finding out what fits best.”
While there has been progress with replacing contractors with full-time employees over the past 10 years, vacancies in the janitorial staff since COVID have been a burden on the district.
