WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ Republican lawmakers are making another push to get the SAVE Act passed the Senate, which would require voters to have a government-issued photo ID to vote and proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections, by watering it down and adding it on to other legislation.
In attempt to get the measure advanced before the 2026 midterm elections, House Republicans have tied the Stop Insider Trading Act, which they passed on Wednesday and would restrict stock trading by members of Congress, with a voter ID stipulation. Even with the revision, some Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have shared on social media that they are dead set on voting no for any portion of the SAVE Act.
GOP leaders like Speaker of the House Mike Johnson have also supported an effort that binds elements of the SAVE Act with farmer assistance and Iran war funding as the path to pass through the Senate remains murky.
