July 13, 2026 ~ Chris Renwick and Lloyd Jackson discuss the Gordie Howe Bridge deal with U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers, who claims that he helped secure better terms for the U.S.
DETROIT ~ The Gordie Howe International Bridge will open July 27 after delays due to President Donald Trump’s disapproval of a previous deal made with Canada.
On Friday, Republican Senate Candidate Veteran Mike Rogers joined Focus with Paul W. Smith Friday afternoon to share an update on the opening of the bridge. A new deal was reached with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will see the U.S. and Canada split net profits from bridge tolls over the next 15 years.
“I had a conversation with Secretary of Commerce Lutnick yesterday. And the deal will be announced in the next few days. That bridge is going to get opened,” Rogers said. “But the financial deal that they secured for us we went from getting no revenue. I believe it’ll be as much as half the revenue. Joint determination what the tolls are. Remember, the Canadians were going to have 100% control of what the tolls were on the board. That’s going to change.”
According to Rogers, the new deal guarantees that Chinese cars will not “pour over” the bridge, avoiding the negative impact that could have been brought to Michigan’s auto industry.
The Gordie Howe Bridge opening has been delayed since early June.
