U.K. ~ British Prime Minister announced Monday that he will be stepping down not only as the leader of the Labour Party, but also as the U.K.’s leader.
He is stepping down amid his waning popularity and his party’s recent local election losses, though Starmer stated that he will remain as leader until Labour picks a new one. Nominations are set to begin July 9, though parliament will break for the summer shortly after. The party would then pick a new leader in September.
So far, former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has announced his intentions to be the next prime minister.
Starmer is the sixth prime minister to resign early since 2016, when the U.K. voted to leave the European Union.
