The 1.7 mile racetrack, with over half of the circuit being free to enter, will host three series: The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, the Indy Nxt presented by Firestone Series, and the NTT IndyCar Series.
The race, which will last until Sunday, May 31, had previously been held on Belle Isle starting in 1992, but moved to the streets of downtown just four years ago.
The event is partnering with businesses and residents of Detroit, as their fundraiser on Friday night called the PwC Grand Prixmiere has raised over $13 million for five separate charities over the past decade.
