VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, MI ~ A Wayne County judge has blocked a metro Detroit landfill from accepting and storing historic radioactive waste, a victory for public officials who spent years working to block the deal.
On Wednesday, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Kevin Cox issued a permanent injunction that will prevent Wayne Disposal Inc. from accepting radioactive waste from a New York storage site. The waste is associated with the Manhattan Project from WWII, where the first nuclear weapons were developed.
The lawsuit had been filed by several communities nearby, including the City of Belleville, Canton Charter Township, the City of Romulus, Van Buren Charter Township, and Wayne County.
