May 15, 2026 ~ Chris Renwick and Lloyd Jackson review Donald Trump’s China visit with Jonathan Hanson, a political scientist at the University of Michigan. They discuss trade, Taiwan, and future US-China relations.
CHINA ~ President Donald Trump said many issues between China and the U.S. were “settled” during his two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, though no specific resolutions were given.
Trump expressed positive thoughts on the state of U.S. and China relations, with Xi calling it the “most important” relationship in the world during the visit. However, the Chinese leader expressed concerns over the island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims, stating that differences in policies towards the island between the major superpowers could lead to a potential conflict.
Trump also spoke on the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which hangs in a fragile ceasefire, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. China is one of Iran’s top allies.
No major agreements or deals between the U.S. and China have been announced since Trump departed Beijing.
Several CEOs traveled with Trump for the summit. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Apple CEO Tim Cook will be among the top guests of Trump’s trip.
