IRAN ~ Direct talks in Pakistan between the U.S. and Iran crumbled over the weekend, with the U.S. now ready to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
President Donald Trump ordered the blockade on Sunday, with U.S. Central Command announcing on X that the blockade will begin at 10 p.m. Monday, April 13. “The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” the post read. “CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.”
The Strait of Hormuz has been a focus in the negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, with the latter closing the waterway after the U.S. and Israel began bombing the country on Feb. 28. The Strait sees about a fifth of the world’s oil supply pass through its waters, with the closure to Iran’s adversaries causing major gas price spikes in the U.S.
The two nations dispute what caused the negotiations to collapse, with Trump writing on Truth Social that “most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not,” despite saying, “the meeting went well.” However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that “we encountered maximalism, shifting goalposts, and blockade” from the U.S. during the talks.
