ROMULUS, MI ~ State and local officials of Romulus have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to convert a city warehouse into an ICE detention facility.
The lawsuit was announced Tuesday by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and city officials, arguing that the site of the proposed detention center, which is near the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, is not a good fit. The lawsuit argues the center would be near schools, near residential neighborhoods, and inside a floodplain.
“It boils down to regulations and processes that were put in place by the federal government for this expansion, and in our opinion, they simply weren’t followed,” said Romulus Mayor Robert A. McCraight. “If they would have followed those processes that were put in place for a reason, they would understand that this is not a good site because of its proximity to the residential area.”
DHS spent $34.7 million to buy the warehouse in February at 7525 Cogswell St., with the planned facility expected to house up to 500 people if opened. This comes as the Trump administration faces scrutiny over its actions in detaining immigrants.
