LANSING ~ Michigan lawmakers are debating whether to remove restrictions on consumer purchases of raw, or unpasteurized, milk.
The GOP-controlled State House could be close to putting a bill up for a vote that would legalize farm-to-consumer sales of raw milk, with State Rep. Matt Maddock (R-Milford) claiming it could help Michigan’s dairy industry and provide more consumer choice. However, many dairy organizations and health experts have voiced concerns over raw milk’s link to public health risks and food poisoning.
According to the CDC, unpasteurized milk can carry harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. The agency has also linked 202 outbreaks, 2,645 illnesses, and 228 hospitalizations from 1998 through 2018 to the consumption of raw milk.
