ANN ARBOR, MICH. ~ For over a year, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and University of Michigan Health have been negotiating a new contract. UofM has requested a 44% compensation increase, according to the insurer. BCBS claims that they can’t pay for this request while Michigan families struggle to cover medical bills, while UofM has denied the claims that they are asking for a 44% increase. Rather, they say they are seeking single-digit annual increases, according to The Detroit News. Regardless, more than 300,000 patients may have to seek out other medical professionals if UofM leaves the network. June 30, 2026 is the deadline for BCBS of Michigan and Michigan Medicine to reach a deal.
