IRAN ~ The U.S. Senate failed to pass a resolution on Wednesday evening that would require President Donald Trump to ask Congress for approval on any military actions in Iran, as major escalations take place in the deadly U.S.-Israel war on Iran.
The war powers resolution failed in a 47-53 vote, mostly along party lines, with Democrats voting for the resolution and Republicans against it, with Democrats voicing frustrations over Trump not asking for approval of military strikes on Iran. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and John Fetterman (D-PA) were the only senators to cross party lines in their votes. The House will vote on a similar war powers resolution on Thursday.
So far, 1,230 people have died in Iran from U.S.-Israel strikes on the country, including over 160 people in an Iranian girl’s school. Israel has also been engaging in strikes on Southern Lebanon, killing 77 people.
Iran has retaliated by launching attacks on U.S. bases and embassies across the Middle East, striking sites in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Israel, Oman, and Bahrain. Turkey has reported that NATO intercepted a missile from Iran heading towards its airspace. A U.K. base in Cyprus was also struck, though the culprit of the strike is currently disputed. Six U.S. troops in the region have been reported killed in these strikes.
The U.S. brought the war outside the region when one of its submarines sank an Iranian warship conducting a training exercise off the coast of Shri Lanka with a torpedo, killing over 80 people on board. Iran later claimed it sank a U.S. oil tanker in the Arabian Gulf.
Reports are emerging that the CIA is working to back Kurdish militia groups to help fight in Iran.
