IRAN ~ Iranian officials appear to be close to picking a new leader days after the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was assassinated in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike campaign, coming amid war waging across the Middle East.
Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, appears to be the leading choice to become the next supreme ruler, though it is believed Iranian clerics are wary of publicly announcing a new leader due to the risk of another U.S.-Israeli assassination. A three-day funeral for the slain leader has also been postponed, due to the high turnout of mourners expected at the ceremony.
The U.S. and Israel have continued intense strikes in Iran, killing 1,045 people in the nation as of Wednesday morning. Israel has also started a fresh wave of airstrikes in Southern Lebanon in clashes against the militia Hezbollah. During the early Wednesday strikes, 11 people were reported killed.
Iran has retaliated with its own barrage of missiles and drones, killing 6 U.S. troops in the region so far. Explosions have been reported in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, with Iran targeting U.S. bases and embassies in the region. Turkey also reported that NATO intercepted an Iranian missile heading towards its airspace.
