WASHINGTON D.C. ~ On Monday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) introduced the “Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act,” proposing a 5% annual wealth tax on U.S. billionaires.
The tax would pull from the collective $8.2 trillion estimated to be held by the country’s current 938 billionaires, with Sanders claiming the bill would generate $4.4 billion in its first decade. The bill would also use the money collected to send out $3,000 checks to “every man, woman, and child in a household making $150,000 or less.“
