WYANDOTTE, MI ~ After public outrage against Wyandotte School Board Trustee Cindy Kinney’s anti-Muslim post on Facebook, handed in her resignation to the school board on Wednesday evening.
The 12-year member of the board caused backlash over a response she made on Tuesday to a Facebook post that asked, “Dogs or Muslims. You can only keep one.” Her response of “dogs” promoted an emergency meeting of the school that evening, which she was absent from, passing a resolution condemning her posts and calling for her resignation.
The board read a written apology sent from Kinney, which read, “It was never my intention to offend, marginalize, or diminish anyone in our community. I understand why many were upset, and I am truly sorry. I also want to address that I’m currently on a previously planned vacation. This trip was scheduled well in advance, and I am not avoiding or running away from this issue.”
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) released a statement welcoming the resignation.
“We encourage the Wyandotte School Board to institute more sensitivity trainings on Islam and Muslims for its board members, staffers and teachers,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
